How to Make Fruity Ice Cream Cozies – Free Crochet Pattern

Recently I’ve become a little obsessed with ice cream. I mean, I’ve always loved ice cream, but at the beginning of 2019 I started dealing with some pretty awful health issues and my food list got very small and that also meant that I couldn’t eat ice cream.
This year I started really craving it again (that’s right, I went almost two years without eating ice cream!) and I started really reading food labels and trying a few different brands, but unfortunately most are filled with ingredients I can’t have (gluten, food dyes, preservatives…etc) and the ones I found without most of this stuff still made me feel icky and then…
I discovered Haagen-Dazs!
Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream is made with very few ingredients, so I can eat a few of their flavors! While I may not be able to eat the whole line (and believe me I am super bummed), I have also discovered an ice cream that is better than any brand I have ever had before (shhh… don’t tell the Maine native: Gifford’s).
While I was eating straight from a pint, I had to wrap my blanket it around it, because my hand was getting so cold, and I said “oh! I should make one of those ice cream cozies!”, but you know the designer in me just had to make my own version. I started planning a totally different cozy, but since I had strawberry ice cream I said “A Strawberry looking ice cream cozy would be so cute!!!” and then you know I just had to come up with a few other fruits, because my brain always thinks in pairs and groups LOL!
So, without further ado, let’s make Fruity Ice Cream Cozies!
Materials
100% Cotton Worsted Weight Yarn (#4)
- Main Color
- 75yds [22m] {<1 ball}
- Medium Green
- 25yds[10m] {<1 ball}
- White [Watermelon Only]
- 25yds[10m] {<1 ball}
- Bright Green [Watermelon Only]
- 25yds[10m] {<1 ball}
H/8/5.00mm Crochet Hook

Notes
- Cozies are worked from the bottom up.
- The majority is worked in the round with no joins or beginning chains.
- Where asterisks appear, repeat the instructions between them.
- If you’re finding your cozy coming out to be too tall, pull some of the rows out of the main color portion.
- Fabric paint is optional, but I love the added details of seeds (and cross lines for the pineapple), but you can still tell what fruit these are without them. These details could be stitched on with a needle and yarn also.

With Main Color,
R1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring (6)
R2: 2 sc arnd (12)
R3: *2 sc, sc* arnd (18)
R4: *2 sc, sc x 2* arnd (24)
Hold the two circles together and sc arnd the edge, working through both layers to join them. Continue to specific fruit instructions.
STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM COZY
With Main Color,
R1: BLO sc arnd (24)

HANDLE (Optional, not detrimental)
With Main Color,
R1: Ch 21, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, turn (20)
R2: Ch 1, sc across, rotate and sl st all the way around the outside of the strap; Fasten.
Finishing
- Optional: For the Strawberry, squeeze tiny dots of white fabric paint all around the cozy. For the Watermelon, squeeze medium size dots of black fabric paint all around the cozy; For the Pineapple, make diagonal lines from top to bottom, some to the left and some to the right, all around the cozy. OR thread a needle with these yarn colors and stitch on the details instead if desired.
- Attach handle to the outside of the cozy; I folded the end of the strap under and sewed it to R15, then I folded the other end under and sewed it to R1, this created a loop or mug style handle.
- Hide all strings.
