Apples are a very popular kitchen decor choice, aren’t they? I even had apples in my kitchen for a long time. There is just something about them, they’re cute, but also give a cozy vibe.

Another great thing about apples is that they are the quintessential teacher’s gift! And that’s actually what sparked the design of the Apple Shaped Pot Holders!

I had a member of the Blackstone Designs Crochet Community request them for teachers and I just loved this idea!

Whether for an apple kitchen or a favorite teacher, these Apple Shaped Pot Holders are the perfect gift. The front pocket is functional, so you can add treats, bagged cookie mixes, spatulas, or even recipe cards!

Psst… I now have some recipe cards you can print off on cardstock to add to your gifts! You can also find two styles of recipe cards in the PDF version of this pattern!

Notes

  • Batting is used for heat resistance. This will provide more padding and protection from hot surfaces, however, two layers of crocheted cotton is typically thick enough for short term protection (from oven to stove top for example). Cotton Batting can be found in any store that sells fabric.
  • 100% cotton yarn (and batting) is recommended. Acrylics can melt if they become too hot.
  • A yard of fabric/batting = 36″H, 1/4 yard of fabric = 9″H, but the width is 54″ wide and batting doesn’t have a specific cutting direction.
  • Beginning chains do not count as stitches.
  • When stitches appear in parenthesis, work them in the same space.
  • When stitches appear between asterisks, repeat them as indicated.

Finishing
  • Lay batting over the bottom apple and cut to shape, leaving approximately ¼” space between the edge of the batting and edge of the apple.
  • Thread needle with matching yarn and insert needle from front to back, then from back to front one stitch over. Tie tails into a knot. — Repeat this several more times in various locations to pin batting to the back panel. Make sure knots are on the batting side, so they can be hidden.
  • Place top apple over the batting and half apple (pocket panel) on the very top. Pin in place as needed (I used sewing clips).
  • Insert hook in bottom right corner, through all 3 layers, single crochet in the same space and in the end of each row and in each stitch around the edge. Make sure you’re working through all crochet layers around. Do not crochet across the top of the pocket.
  • Attach stem to top center between humps.
  • Attach leaf over bottom of stem angled upward.
  • Attach the hanger to the upper left as desired.
  • Hide all strings.
