Notes

  • Batting is used for heat resistance. This will provide more padding and protection from hot surfaces, however, two layers of crocheted cotton is typically thick enough for short term protection (from oven to stove top for example). Cotton Batting can be found in any store that sells fabric.
  • 100% cotton yarn (and batting) is required. Acrylics can melt if they become too hot.
  • A yard of fabric = 36″H, 1/4 yard of fabric = 9″H, but the width is 54″ wide and batting doesn’t have a specific cutting direction.
  • Beginning chains do not count as stitches.
  • When stitches appear in parenthesis, work them in the same space.
  • When stitches appear between asterisks, repeat them as indicated.

Finishing

  • Lay batting over the bottom heart and cut to shape, leaving approximately ¼” space between the edge of the batting and edge of the heart.
  • Thread needle with matching yarn and insert needle from front to back, then from back to front one stitch over. Tie tails into a knot. — Repeat this several more times in various locations to pin batting to the back panel. Make sure knots are on the batting side, so they can be hidden.
  • Place top heart over the batting and half heart (pocket panel) on the very top. Pin in place as needed (I used sewing clips).
  • Insert hook in bottom point, through all 3 layers, and single crochet in the same space and in the end of each row up the side, in each stitch across the top, and in the end of each row down the left edge, place 2 more sc in the bottom point, sl st to join in 1st sc; Fasten. Make sure you’re working through all crochet layers around. Do not crochet across the top of the pocket.
  • Ch 1, reverse single crochet around, placing a slip stitch in the slip stitch at the top, slip stitch to join in first stitch; Fasten.
  • Attach the hanger to the upper left as desired.
  • Hide all strings.

I just love this pattern. I have made it twoce so far, getting ready to give the 2nd one to my daughter, She specifically asked for it after seeing the first one. She is in love with it as much as I am. Even with her kitchen being in black, she wanted a black heart potholder. So I obliged! Thanks so much for your amazing patterns!
