This bag is the perfect “make it for me” project, but it’s also a great gift item! And that’s why I designed it for the Giftstravaganza Blog Hop hosted by Underground Crafter!

I think this bag would be fun to make in red and white “peppermint” stripes as a holiday bag too, so it could be used an alternate gift wrap, just stuff it with your favs!

This bag was made using Premier Yarns Bloom in Gerbera and I absolutely love the splotches of color in the corners! I’d love to see it in other Bloom yarn colorways!

Notes
  • Chain 2 can be used in place of alternate double crochet; make sure to skip the first stitch.
  • Bag can be made smaller or larger by working the length to be 3X the measurement of the width. For instance, if you wanted a larger bag you could start with a 10” wide strip, then multiple by 3 to make it 30” long.
  • Larger tutorial photos are at the end of the pattern.
Special Stitches

Alternate Double Crochet (Adc): Without chaining, work sc in first stitch, insert hook in middle of sc, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through both loops.

Instructions

STRIP

R1. Ch 20, dc in 3rd chain from hook (2 skipped chains counts as 1st dc), dc in next 16 chains, turn (18)

R2. Do not chain, Adc in 1st st, dc in remaining 17 sts sc, turn (18)

Repeat R2 until strip measures as 24”, then fold strip as directed below:

Lay strip flat, so the long edge is the width, and fold the right top corner down, so the short edge matches up to the bottom edge. Then fold the bottom corner up, so the short edge matches up to the top of the long edge. Next, pivot the project slightly so the long flat edge is at a diagonal and the diagonal left edge becomes a flat side edge. Lastly, fold the diagonal edge upward at the left bottom corner fold.

Line up the row ends and sew together as shown, then flip bag over and sew the other seam. Turn the bag right side out to hide the seams on the inside.

Optional: Add a closure and clean edge:

Attach yarn to the right side of “V”, chain 5, sl st to left side of “V” (closure made). Continue around the opening by placing scs evenly around working in the ends of each row and in each stitch; sl st to bottom of where closure was started; Fasten.
