Whether you’re heading to a family BBQ, watching fireworks, or snapping adorable holiday photos, this baby sundress is sure to steal the show. In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about this cute crochet pattern—from the design inspiration to tips for stitching it up, yarn recommendations, and how to customize it for your little star. Grab your hook and let’s dive in!

Let’s Talk About the Stitchwork

One of the standout features of this crochet sundress is the light and airy finish. The bodice is made alternating front loop and back loop half double crochets preventing it from getting too bulky, while the skirt is worked using treble crochets to give a breathable open stitchwork. The inspiration: the American flag flowing in the wind!

Sizing and Fit

The Stars and Stripes Sundress Crochet Pattern instructions are written for five baby sizes: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months, and 18-24 months. There are also child sizes available!

This sundress is designed to be a bit loose and flowy, so your baby can move freely and stay cool in the heat. The bodice should have a snug fit, with the skirt flaring out gently. If you’re crocheting for a baby who’s between sizes, I recommend sizing up so they can wear it longer!

Always be sure to check your gauge before starting. I know it’s tempting to skip, but it’ll save you a lot of time and ensure the dress comes out just right.

Why You’ll Love the Stars and Stripes Sundress

There are tons of reasons to fall in love with this baby sundress pattern:

Great Photo Prop: If you love dressing up your baby for seasonal photo shoots, this dress is practically made for it.

Patriotic & Cute: The red, white, and blue theme gives off serious Americana vibes, and the star-studded bodice adds a playful twist.

Perfect for Summer: The sleeveless design and lightweight yarn make it breathable and comfy for warm-weather wear.

Fun to Crochet: The pattern keeps things interesting with color changes and a simple stitch combination that’s great for adventurous beginners or experienced crocheters.

Customization Ideas

Want to make the sundress even more special? Here are a few fun ways to personalize it:

  • Add Rhinestones: Add gems to the center of the star appliqués.
  • Attach a Ribbon: Weave a satin ribbon through the waistline for a cute finish.
  • Play with Color: Try using sparkle yarns or swap traditional red-white-blue for other color combos like pink, silver, and navy for a modern twist.
  • Make It Rainbow: Replace the stripes with a rainbow pattern and keep the bodice one solid color for a fun take on the design.

Make and Gift This Dress

The Stars and Stripes Sundress makes an awesome handmade gift for:

  • Baby showers with a summer theme
  • First Fourth of July celebrations
  • Memorial Day BBQs
  • Military family events or photo shoots
  • Patriotic parades or summer birthdays

Pair it with a matching headband or diaper cover to complete the outfit!

How to Care for the Finished Crochet Sundress

If you used cotton yarn, you’re in luck—this dress should be machine washable on a gentle cycle. Still, it’s always best to check your yarn label and let the item air dry flat to keep it looking its best.

Handmade baby clothes tend to be keepsakes, so it’s a good idea to store them with care if you plan to save them for future kiddos or as a memory piece.

BOW

To create the bow as pictured you will make a “wave”. Starting with scs, working into hdcs, then into dcs, back to hdcs and then finishing with scs. Repeat the same exact pattern with all three colors. *I am not giving specific instructions for each size; you can make it bigger or smaller if you choose.

For the pictured dress (12-18M) I worked this pattern:

With Color A,

R1. Ch 81, sc x 15, hdc x 15, dc x 20, hdc x 15, sc x 15 across, turn

With Color C,

R2. Ch 1, sc x 15, hdc x 15, dc x 20, hdc x 15, sc x 15 across, turn

With Color B,

R3. Repeat row 2; Fasten.

Finishing
  • Arrange stars in a staggered position as pictured on halter and sew in place. *If you arrange the stars differently the suggested number of stars will be different.
  • Attach bow to front center of dress where the halter and skirt meet.
  • Hide all strings.
