How to Make the Nor’easter Hat – Free Crochet Pattern
Beat the winter chill with the Nor’easter Hat free crochet hat pattern! This thick and warm crochet hat made with chunky yarn is the perfect snow day hat!

I actually made this toasty hat for myself! I hardly ever crochet items for me to keep and use, but I was in need of a super warm hat for our below zero temps! This hat is perfect. So cozy!

Materials
Chunky Weight Yarn (#5)
- 190(200)yds
L/8.00mm Hook

3.5 main st. repeats x 11.5 rows = 4″

Notes
- Beginning ch-1 does not count as a stitch.
- Where asterisks appear, repeat the instructions between them as indicated.
- Where brackets appear, repeat the instructions between them as indicated. Brackets used in this pattern mark a repeat of instructions that include their own repeating pattern. Pay close attention to these instructions.
- Pattern is written for size Small Adult, with instructions for Large Adult in parenthesis.
- Final stitch count has Small Adult in parenthesis and Large Adult in brackets.
Special Stitches
Split Single Crochet (ssc) – AKA Waistcoat stitch: work single crochets through the V of a single crochet, not in the top loops.
Treble Crochet Two Together (trc2tog) – YO 2X, insert hook in stitch indicated, YO draw up a loop, *YO, pull through 2 loops on hook* 2X, YO 2X, insert hook in same stitch, YO draw up a loop *YO, pull through 2 loops on hook* 2X, YO, pull through remaining 3 loops.
Treble Crochet Three Together (trc3tog) – YO 2X, insert hook in stitch indicated, YO draw up a loop, *YO, pull through 2 loops on hook* 2X, [YO 2X, insert hook in same stitch, YO draw up a loop *YO, pull through 2 loops on hook* 2X]2X, YO, pull through remaining 4 loops.
Instructions
BRIM
R1. Ch 15, hdc in the back bump of the 2nd ch and in each ch across, turn (14)[14]
R2. Ch 1, BLO hdc in each st across, turn (14)[14]
R3-30(34). Repeat row 2.
At the end of Row 30(34), hold the short edges together and sl st across each stitch, working through both layers to join them (keep sl sts on the outside of brim while working the base); Continue to base.
BASE
R1. Ch 1, sc in the end of each row arnd, sl st to join in 1st hdc, do not turn (30)[34]
R2. Ch 1, ssc in 1st st, trc2tog in next st, *ssc, trc2tog* arnd, sl st to join in the top of the 1st sc, do not turn (30)[34]
R3. Ch 1, ssc in sc, sc in trc2tog, *ssc, sc* arnd, sl st to join in top of 1st sc, do not turn (30)[34]
R4. Repeat round 2
R5. Repeat round 3
R6. Ch 1, ssc in 1st sc, trc3tog in next, *ssc, trc3tog* arnd, sl st to join in top of 1st sc, do not turn (30)[34]
R7. Ch 1, ssc in sc, sc in trc3tog, *ssc, sc* arnd, sl st to join in top of 1st sc, do not turn (30)[34]
R8-15. Repeat rounds 2 & 3
R16-17. Repeat rounds 6 & 7
R18-25. Repeat rounds 2 & 3
Cut tail so it’s approximately 12″, flip hat inside out, weave tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to close. Thread tail through needle and sew the center, so it stays closed.
Finishing
- Add pom pom to top-center.
- Roll brim up.
- Hide all strings.
And now you have a Nor’easter Hat!
