How to Make a Pumpkin or Jack O’Lantern Flatware Holder – Free Crochet Pattern

Materials

Worsted Weight Yarn (#4)

-Orange [2oz/100g]

-Green [1/2oz/30g]

-Black [Scraps]

I/9/5.50mm Hook

H/8/5.00mm Hook

Yarn Needle

Gauge

7 sts x 6 rows = 2”

Gauge is not critical for this project

hdc = half double crochet

dc = double crochet

sc = single crochet

sc2tog = single crochet two together

Notes

  • Beginning chains do not count as stitches.
  • The first 4 rows only use a I/9/5.50mm crochet hook.

Instructions

With Green + I Hook,

R1. Ch 11, sc in the back bump of the 2nd ch and in each ch across, turn (10)

R2. Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (10)

With Orange + H Hook,

R3. Ch 1, sc across, turn (10)

R4. Ch 1, *sc, dc* across, turn (10)

R5-41. Repeat R4; Fasten at the end of R41.

STEM

With Green + H Hook,

R1. Ch 9, sc in back bump of 2nd ch and across, turn (8)

R2. Ch 1, sc in each st across; Fasten. (8)

R3-4. Repeat R2; continuing arnd outside: sl st in the end of each row and in each st arnd, sl st to 1st sl st; Fasten.

LEAF

With Green + H Hook,

R1. Ch 4, sc in back bump of 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next, (hdc, sc) in last, turn and work in opposite side of ch: (sc, hdc), hdc, sc, ch 1, sl st in 1st sc; Fasten.

R2.Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (3)

R3-4. Repeat R2; continuing arnd outside: sl st in the end of each row and in each st arnd, ch 1, sl st to 1st sl st; Fasten.

CURLICUE

With Green + H Hook,

Ch 7, 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 sts, sc x 1 in next 2 sts; Fasten. Twist to shape into a curl.

EYES

With Black + H Hook,

R1. Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch and across, turn (3)

R2. Ch 1, sc3tog, turn (1)

R3. Ch 1, sc; continuing down side: sl st in the end of each row and in each stitch arnd, sl st to 1st sl st; Fasten.

MOUTH

R1. Make magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring (6)

R2. 2 sc in each st arnd; Fasten. (12)

Finishing

  • Fold between rows 16 & 17. Pin into place as needed. <Pocket created>
  • With Orange yarn: Insert hook in bottom right corner, through both layers, and single crochet in the same space and in the end of each row up the side, in each stitch across the top, and in the end of each row down the left edge. Fasten. [Do not crochet across the top of the pocket].
  • Attach stem to front center of rows 1 & 2.
  • Attach curlicue up against side of stem.
  • Attach leaf over the top of the curlicue.
  • Attach face as desired.
  • Hide all strings.

Now you have a Pumpkin or Jack O’Lantern Flatware Holder!
