Whether you’re brand new to crocheting or an experienced maker, you’ll love how quick and customizable this project is. Let’s dive into all the reasons this granny square bag pattern deserves a spot on your hook.

What is a Hobo Bag?

A hobo bag is a style of handbag or tote that’s usually large, soft, and slouchy in shape. It has a crescent or half-moon silhouette, which gives it that relaxed, “boho” or casual vibe. The bag often looks like it droops or slouches when you carry it, rather than holding a rigid structure.

How the Granny Square Hobo Bag is Made

Instead of assembling multiple small motifs, you’ll work one oversized granny square until it reaches the desired size. From there, strategic decreases are worked around the edges, which pull the square into a pouch-like shape. Add strong straps, and you’ve got yourself a slouchy hobo bag. The result? A crochet project that’s equal parts functional, trendy, and fun to make.

Why Make a Granny Square Hobo Bag?

There’s something satisfying about granny squares. They’re one of the first motifs many crocheters learn, yet they never go out of style. By working a giant version of the traditional granny square, this project combines nostalgic crochet vibes with modern fashion functionality.

It’s one of those crochet projects where the construction feels a little clever. What starts as a flat piece of fabric suddenly becomes a 3D, functional accessory.

Here are just a few reasons you’ll love this bag:

  • Practicality – It’s large and roomy, making it perfect for errands, market trips, or daily essentials.
  • Style – The hobo shape adds a trendy, casual slouch that pairs perfectly with jeans and a tee or a boho-inspired outfit.
  • Customization – Choose your favorite yarn colors, striping style, or fiber type to create a bag that’s uniquely yours.
  • Skill-building – Even though it’s simple, you’ll practice granny square construction, decreasing, and shaping in one project.
  • Eco-friendly – Ditch plastic bags and use this tote as a reusable shopping or produce bag.

It’s a pattern that’s just as fun to make as it is to use!

Yarn Choices for Your Bag

The best part about crochet bags is how versatile they are when it comes to yarn. Here are some great options depending on your needs:

  • Cotton Yarn – Strong, durable, and washable. Perfect for market totes and everyday carry-alls. Cotton also holds its shape well, which is great for structured bags.
  • Acrylic Yarn – Lightweight, budget-friendly, and available in every color imaginable. Although this yarn isn’t as sturdy as cotton and may stretch if the contents get too heavy.
  • Blends – Yarns with a mix of cotton and acrylic offer the best of both worlds: strength, color variety, and drape.
  • Bulky Yarns – If you want a fast project with a chunky, cozy look, go for bulky yarn. You’ll have a bigger, squishier bag in no time.

Pro tip: Choose a yarn with little stretch or add a fabric liner when using a flexible yarn.

Color Ideas and Inspiration

Granny squares are famous for their bold color play, and this project is the perfect place to experiment. Here are some color palette ideas to spark inspiration:

  • Classic Boho – Mix earth tones like mustard, terracotta, cream, and olive for a vintage-inspired bag.
  • Monochrome Chic – Stick to shades of black, gray, and white for a modern, minimalist accessory.
  • Seasonal Hues – Make a fall-inspired bag with orange, burgundy, and gold, or a spring tote in pastel pinks, lilacs, and mint.
  • Scrap-Busting Bag – Use leftover yarn from your stash for a vibrant, patchwork look. Every round can be a new surprise!

Because this project only uses one granny square, color changes are easy to manage, and the results look impressive without being complicated.

Strap Options for Your Hobo Bag

The strap is an important finishing detail that determines how comfortable and durable your bag will be. Here are a few strap variations to consider:

  • Crochet Straps – Wide, dense stitch like single crochet, half double crochet, or slip stitch back loop only creates a sturdy strap that won’t dig into your shoulder.
  • Braided Strap – Crochet (or chain) three long strips and braid them together for a decorative boho strap.
  • Leather or Faux Leather Straps – For a polished, store-bought look, sew or attach leather handles.
  • Adjustable Strap – Add buckles or D-rings to make your strap adjustable in length for maximum versatility.

No matter which style you choose, be sure to reinforce the joins where the strap attaches to the bag. This ensures your hobo bag can handle plenty of weight.

What Can You Use the Granny Square Hobo Bag For?

This crochet hobo bag isn’t just a pretty accessory—it’s surprisingly functional! Here are some great ways to use it:

  • Everyday Purse – Carry your wallet, phone, keys, and other essentials.
  • Market Tote – Perfect for groceries, farmers’ markets, or flea market finds.
  • Project Bag – Store your yarn, hooks, and WIPs when you’re on the go.
  • Beach Bag – Toss in your sunscreen, towel, and snacks for a day at the shore.
  • Gift Bag – Fill with goodies and give it as a handmade gift that doubles as part of the present.

Once you make one, you’ll probably want to make several for different uses!

Customization Ideas

One of the joys of crochet is making each piece your own. Here are some fun ways to customize your hobo bag:

Charms or Keychains – Clip on pom-poms, macramé charms, or crochet flowers for a pop of personality.

Add Tassels or Fringe – Attach them along the bottom edge or sides for a playful boho vibe.

Pockets – Crochet or sew in a small pocket inside the bag for keys or your phone. Especially if lining with fabric!

Buttons or Closures – Add a loop and button, toggle, or magnetic snap to keep the bag closed.

Time Commitment and Skill Level

This is an Easy skill level crochet project. The granny square itself is beginner level, but the decreasing of the edging to form the bag may be a little more tricky, so I marked this pattern as an easy skill (although I think a confident beginner could handle it!).

As far as time, this will depend on your skill level. A beginner is likely to take a little more time than someone that is well experienced with crochet. The bag took me about two days to complete with adding a fabric liner (or roughly 8 hours).

About the Materials

The Granny Square Hobo Bag was made with 100% Cotton Worsted Weight Yarn, specifically I Love this Cotton. This yarn can easily be substituted with Knit Picks Dishie or Paintbox Cotton Aran.

You will also need an H/8/5.00mm crochet hook and yarn needles for stitching on the handles and securing loose tails. An optional material is fabric to line the bag, which I highly recommend if making for everyday use.

R1. Ch 3, join to form a ring: In ring, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 2* 3X, sl st to top of beginning ch 2; Fasten if changing colors.

With Main Color,

R2. Attach yarn to ch-2 space, (ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same space as join, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 space, ch 1* 3X, sl st to top of beginning ch 2; Fasten if changing colors.

With Color B,

R3. Attach yarn to ch-2 space, (ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same space as join, ch 1, 3 dc between CLs, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 space, ch 1, 3 dc between CLs, ch 1* 3X, sl st to top of beginning ch 2; Fasten if changing colors.

With Main Color,

R4. Attach yarn to ch-2 space, (ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same space as join, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) between CLs, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) between CLs* 3X, sl st to top of beginning ch 2; Fasten if changing colors.

Repeat R4 to desired size, alternating colors as desired. Bag shown was repeated for 24 rows with a color change pattern of *A, MC, B, MC, C, MC, D, MC, E, MC* ending with MC.

With Main Color,

R5. Ch 1, sc in each st and ch space around

If adding a fabric liner, do it here. I suggest cotton or poly-cotton: Hide all tails first, lay square flat, wrong side up, and measure inside the border (just under the top loops), cut fabric to the same measurement, plus ⅜”. Fold ⅜” of the edge down towards the wrong side of the fabric and iron flat. Now, attach the fabric to the square: Line the fabric up just under the top loops (do not cover the loops, because you need them to finish the bag), wrong side down. You can attach the fabric via sewing machine, hand sewing, or if you’re using cotton yarn, you can attach a backing with heat bond tape. Heat bond tape can be used with other yarns, but be careful not to overheat the iron and melt or shrink the yarn.

R6-7. dec arnd

R8. *dec across one edge, sc in every stitch across next edge* 2X, sl st x 2; Fasten.

[Note: decreased edges = side edges]

HANDLES (Make 2)

R1. Ch 91(126), sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, turn (90)[125]

R2-5. Ch 1, sc across, turn

R6. Ch 1, sc across, do not turn

R7. sl st in end of each  row and in each st arnd outside of strap; Fasten.

Finishing
  • Attach handles to the front panel, approximately 5 stitches from the ends. Each end of the strap will be attached to a “corner”. (Note: shorter edges are the sides). Repeat on back panel.
  • Secure and hide all strings.
