Crochet Star Stitch Free Tutorial

The crochet Star stitch adds a unique texture and dimension to any project, making it a popular choice for blankets, scarves, and even clothing.
With it’s two row repeat, this intermediate skill level stitch is fun to learn and get creative with!
What is the crochet Star stitch?
The Star stitch, also known as the Marguerite stitch, is a combination of single-crochet-five-together (sc5tog) and half double crochets worked over two rows. The sc5tog creates the star base and the hdc stitches create the top. This is a popular stitch, used by many crochet designers across a variety of projects!
Why chose the Star stitch?
Not only is the Star stitch a beautiful stitch, alone is a great reason to learn it, but it’s also an enjoyable stitch to work up. Although this stitch would be classified as an intermediate stitch, due to the placement on the single crochets that create the sc5tog, but it’s not all that difficult to learn!
What projects would be good for the Star Stitch?
The star stitch is great for many projects, which is why it has been so often chosen for more advanced crochet patterns. You can find and create crochet patterns such as afghans and baby blankets, pillows, bags, and even sweaters.

Notes
- Beginning chains do not count as stitches.
- Where asterisks appear, repeat the instructions between them.
- Where brackets appear, repeat the instructions between them as indicated.
- This pattern is worked in a multiple of 2; the instructions are written for a beginning ch-57, but you can add or remove chains in multiples of 2 (the beginning ch will be an odd number).
- To work a gauge swatch, chain 23 then work the pattern below for 12 total rows.

Instructions
R1. Working in the back bump of the chain across:
Ch 57, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop, [insert hook in next ch and draw up a loop] until there are 6 loops on the hook, yo, draw through all 6 loops, ch 1, *insert hook in “eyelet” at top of star and draw up a loop, insert hook in space between the 5th & 6th loops of the previous star stitch and draw up a loop, insert hook in the same space the previous star stitch ended and draw up a loop, [insert hook in next unworked ch and draw up a loop] 2X, yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook, ch 1* across, hdc in the last st, turn (26 stars, 2 hdc)
R2. Ch 1, hdc in first space, 2 hdc in each “eyelet” across, 2 hdc in last stitch, turn (56)
R3. Ch 1, hdc in first space, insert hook in the middle of the hdc and draw up a loop, insert hook in same space that the hdc started and draw up a loop, [insert hook in next st and draw up a loop] 3X, yo, draw through all 6 loops, ch 1, *insert hook in “eyelet” at top of star and draw up a loop, insert hook in space between 5th & 6th loops of previous star and draw up a loop, insert hook in the same space the previous star stitch ended and draw up a loop, [insert hook in top of next hdc and draw up a loop] 2X, yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook, ch 1* across, hdc in the last st, turn (26 stars, 2 hdc)
R4. Ch 1, hdc in first space, 2 hdc in each “eyelet” across, 2 hdc in last stitch, turn (56)
Repeat R3 & 4 until the fabric measures 14 ½” high.R5. Ch 1, sc in the end of every other row and st arnd, keeping a loose tension; Fasten.
Finishing
- Block square to 15″ x 15″
- Hide all strings.
