How to Make a Crystal Ball Candy Dish – Free Crochet Pattern

Make a Crystal Ball Candy Dish and have a secret hiding place for your sweet treats! Crocheting for Halloween is so much fun, but even better is that this can be used all year long!

I designed this pattern because I love functional crochet: projects with a purpose! It is a unique Halloween crochet decor piece that also has a use.

Of course you can also use it to hide other items like money or keys, but I keep mine on my desk with the little snacks I want to hide from the kids!

From bottom of base to top of ball = 7.25″ approx.

Ball = 17.25″ x 5.5″

Base = 15.5″ x 2.5″ approx.

Notes
  • Beginning chain-1 on single crochet rows does not count as a stitch.
  • Beginning chain-2 on double crochet rows does count as a stitch. 
  • Ball is worked top-down, in the round, with no joins or turns.
  • Base is worked using double strands (two strands held together).
  • Base is worked in two pieces that are sewn together. 
  • Caron Simply Soft Party in Purple Sparkle and Black Sparkle were used in this sample. 
  • La Mode style 26219 Gold Metal Moon and Star buttons were used in this sample.
Special Stitches

Invisible Decrease (inv dec) = insert hook under front loop of first stitch, insert hook under front loop on next stitch, yarn over, draw through both front loops together, complete sc as normal.

Cut string, weave tail through remaining stitches, and pull tight to close; Fasten. 


DISH BOTTOM – 4.50mm Hook

With Black (double strands),

R1. Make adjustable ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring (6)

R2. 2 sc arnd (12)

R3. *2 sc, sc* arnd (18)

R4. *2 sc, sc x 2* arnd (24)

R5. *2 sc, sc x 3* arnd (30)

R6. *2 sc, sc x 4* arnd (36)

R7. *2 sc, sc x 5* arnd; Fasten. (42)


DISH SIDE – 4.50mm Hook

With Black (double strands),

R1. Ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, turn (9 sc)

R2. Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), dc in each st across, turn (9 dc)

R3. Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (9 sc)

R4. Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), dc x 2, working into the 3 center sts of previous dc row: skip 1st dc, FPtrc x 2, FPtrc in skipped dc, dc in last 3 sc, turn (6 dc, 3 FPtrc)

R5. Ch 1, sc x 3, trc x 3 (in loops behind FPtrc of previous row), sc x 3, turn (6 sc, 3 trc)

R6. Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), dc x 2, working across FPtrcs in order as they appear: sk 1st FPtrc, FPtrc x 2, FPtrc in skipped FPtrc, dc x 3, turn (6 dc, 3 FPtrc)

R7. Ch 1, sc x 3, trc x 3 (in loops behind FPtrc of previous row), sc x 3, turn (6 sc, 3 trc)

R8-40. Repeat steps 6 & 7

R41. Ch 1, sc across, lifting up the FPtrcs and pinning them to the trcs behind them, by working scs through both layers together; Fasten. (9 sc)

Assemble Dish: With bottom right side facing up, wrap the side piece, wrong side facing out, around the bottom (pin in place as you go) and sew evenly around to attach. Once the base is attached to the side, sew the side seam shut, working from the bottom of the base and up. This seam is front center of your candy dish.

R42. Insert hook in top of side seam, Ch 1, sl st in each st around; Fasten. (41)

Finishing

  • Large Star: Thread needle with white yarn: Insert needle under round 16 of ball, bring needle through inside of ball and out over round 12, reinsert under round 16; make another pass through to double up the stitch. After inserting needle under round 16 the second time, bring needle out of row 18, 2 sts to the right. Pass the yarn over the top of the stitching and insert 2 sts to the left; repeat to double up string. Fasten off.
  • 1st Small Star:  Thread needle with white yarn: Insert needle under round 12 of ball, bring needle through inside of ball and out over round 10, reinsert under round 12; make another pass through to double up the stitch. After inserting needle under round 12 the second time, bring needle out of row 11, 1 st to the right. Pass the yarn over the top of the stitching and insert 1 st to the left; repeat to double up string. Fasten off.
  • 2nd Small Star:  Thread needle with white yarn: Insert needle under round 16 of ball, bring needle through inside of ball and out over round 14, reinsert under round 16; make another pass through to double up the stitch. After inserting needle under round 16 the second time, bring needle out of row 15, 1 st to the right. Pass the yarn over the top of the stitching and insert 1 st to the left; repeat to double up string. Fasten off.
  • Attach decorative buttons over the dish’s seam in desired location.
  • Hide All Strings. 


Voila! A Crystal Ball Candy Dish

Now, you can fill your dish with candy, place the “crystal” ball on top, and no one will know where to find your secret stash!
