Notes

• Beginning chains do not count as stitches.
• Where asterisks appear, repeat the instructions between them. 
• Where parenthesis appear within the instructions, work those stitches all into the same space.
• Batting is used for heat resistance. This will provide more padding and protection from hot surfaces, however, two layers of crocheted cotton is typically thick enough for short term protection (from oven to stove top). Cotton Batting can be found in any store that sells fabric.
• 100% cotton yarn (and batting) is recommended. Acrylics can melt if they become too hot.
• A yard of fabric = 36″H, 1/4 yard of fabric = 9″H, but the width is 54″ wide. Batting doesn’t have a specific cutting direction.

Special Stitches

reverse single crochet (rsc) = Work single crochet in opposite direction by inserting hook in next stitch (to the right if right-handed or to the left if left-handed), yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

Finishing

• Cut batting to roughly the shape and size of the full panels. 
• Lay back panel flat and lay batting on top, so the bottom edges line up.
• Thread needle with White yarn, insert needle from front to back, then from back to front one stitch over, and tie tails into a knot (on batting side). — Repeat this step multiple times. <This step tacks the 2 layers together and holds the batting in place. >
• Lay the other full panel over the batting, then lay the pocket panel over the top, lining up the bottom edges.
• Insert hook in bottom right corner, through all 3 crochet layers, and with White yarn single crochet in the same space and in the end of each row up the side, in each stitch across the top, in the end of each row down the left edge; Switch to White yarn and single crochet in each stitch across the bottom;Fasten. Make sure you’re working through all the crochet layers around. Do not crochet across the top of the pocket.
• Attach Eyes to the front of the pot holder 4 rows from the top, leaving approximately 4 stitches between them.
• Shape the mouth into an oval shape as desired.
• Attach Mouth to the front of the pot holder 8 rows from the top and centered between the eyes.
• Attach the pumpkin to the front center of the pocket panel, so the tip of the stem is over R18 of the pocket. 
• Attach arms to the front side edges of the pocket, tipped slightly down, so the edge of the arms (“fingers”) overlaps R4 on the pumpkin.
• Stitch Cheeks under eyes, leaving one row between the eye and cheek. 
• Attach the hanger to the upper left corner as desired.
• Optional: With White, stitch “shine” onto eyes. I did mine in the upper right quadrant.
• Optional: stitch on eyelashes. (Not shown)
• Hide all strings.
