How to Make the Astrology Afghan Free Crochet Pattern
If you’ve ever dreamed of combining your love for crochet with your passion for the stars, this Astrology Afghan is the perfect project! I’ve been an astrology enthusiast since I was a kid, and creating a zodiac blanket has always been on my bucket list. I don’t know why it took me so long to finally design one, but I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

A Celestial Crochet Design
This crochet blanket features 12 squares, each showcasing the glyph of one zodiac sign. I worked mine in black and white glitter yarn for a bold, monochrome look that sparkles like the night sky. The shimmering yarn adds a celestial vibe while keeping the palette sleek and modern.
But the beauty of this pattern is how customizable it is. You can make it in any worsted weight yarn—switch the black for navy blue to mimic the stars, or use self-striping yarn for bursts of unexpected color. Another fun idea is to crochet each square in the traditional color of its zodiac sign for a vibrant, personalized blanket.
Cosmic Comfort
Each square showcases the glyph of its respective zodiac sign, making this afghan a perfect gift for astrology enthusiasts or a stylish addition to your own home. Whether draped over a sofa or used as a cozy throw, this afghan beautifully blends personal meaning with cosmic charm.
Beyond the Afghan
One of my favorite parts about designing these squares is how versatile they are! You don’t have to stop at a blanket—these zodiac motifs can be transformed into so many other projects. Here are a few creative ideas:
- Pillow: Crochet two matching squares or pair a zodiac square with a plain back panel.
- Tote Bag: I started with the Scorpio Square and now I’m making myself a zodiac tote (pattern coming soon!).
- Sweater Back Panel: Add a zodiac square to your favorite crochet sweater design.
- Shawl or Wrap: Line up several squares for a cozy celestial layer.
- Wall Hanging: Add fringe or tassels and turn it into unique home décor.
- Framed Art: Add a cute frame for modern wall art.
- Rug: Make a bold statement piece for your floor.
And with smaller yarn and hook sizes, you can scale down these designs for even more options:
- Coasters
- Dishcloths
- Pot Holders
- Hats
Since I started with the Scorpio Square, I am now making myself a tote bag! (I will update this post with finished photos once it’s done and I will post the pattern).
The best part about this project is how much room there is to make it your own. Whether you keep it classic and sleek or colorful and bold, this afghan reflects both your crochet style and your star sign personality. It’s not just a blanket—it’s a creative expression of the cosmos in yarn form.
