This hat was originally designed for the Furl’s Blog Hop 20202.

For this blog hop, each designer is using Furls’ Whims Merino yarn (which comes in DK and Worsted Weight) and one of their gorgeous hooks! (I’m using an Odyssey!)

Whims Merino is a special yarn just for crocheters! It’s twisted the opposite direction (called the Z-twist) and it holds up better to crocheting than other yarns! Also worth mentioning is that this yarn is incredibly soft, has great drape, and has beautiful stitch definition!

The Odyssey Hooks are a delight to work with. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t think I would be able to crochet with them, because I am a pencil holder, but I chose these hooks because they are so pretty and I’ve never tried this style before. I’m overjoyed that I chose them, because they were a breeze to work with and they just made the crochet project that much more fun! Plus, they have hook holders and yarn bowls that match these hooks!

Ok, so now that you’ve learned a little more about the products I used, let’s get down to it!

Here’s the instructions to make your own Stripes and Heart Beanie!

Materials

Furls’ Whims Merino

  • Double Knit Weight Yarn (#3)
    • Mustard (MC) [1 ball]
    • Undyed (ACA) [1 hank]
    • Pink (ACB) [1 ball]

G/6/4.00mm Hook

Yarn Needle

Gauge

20 scs x 23 rows = 4”

Sizes

Child (20”)

Adult (22”)

Stitch Guide

Notes

  • Beginning ch-1 does not count as a stitch
  • Work color changes over the previous color’s strand instead of dragging the strand behind to help keep the shape and stability of the heart section upon wearing.
  • Where asterisks appear, repeat the instructions between them.
  • Sizes are separated out.
  • Yarn thickness varies by brand/line. Although you may choose a Worsted Weight Yarn in the Medium-4 category, your gauge may be off slightly from mine.

Color Changes

Before we get into the crocheting, here’s a quick reminder on how to make color changes (this is a tutorial from my Buffalo Check Plaid Blanket / Fur Lined Plaid Ear Warmer pattern, but the instructions are the same):

When changing colors, finish off the last stitch by pulling the new color through the last two loops on hook. We are using single crochets for this, so you would work it this way (for example): with Color B, insert hook in stitch indicated, yarn over, draw up a loop, drop Color B, pull Color A through those two loops created by Color B.

Now you will create your single crochets with Color A by stitching over the Color B strand. Lay Color B strand across the top of the other stitches, and then work your Color A single crochet stitches as normal. Whatever color you are not using at the time will be crocheted over. This helps create a more stable fabric, as well as saving time on weaving in ends later.
