I love working with mixed media! Whether I’m adding a fabric liner to my handbags or using 3D fabric paint for adding details to my projects or even using jewelry findings to make Christmas ornaments.

Once I started sewing and machine embroidering, I found myself using a lot of clear vinyl fabric. I loved all the different ways you can sew with it, and that gave me an idea: I could crochet with this too!

So, I promptly sat down and started thinking of ways to put crochet and vinyl together to make fun projects that would be quick and easy for the everyday crocheter. I have a long list of projects, but for now it’s just this Clear Window Pencil Pouch and the Clear Envelope Pouch.

Notes

  • Vinyl comes in gauges. The higher the number, the thicker the vinyl is. 4 Gauge is super thin and flimsy, 40 gauge is super thick and tough to hole punch.
  • A yard of fabric = 36″H, 1/4 yard of fabric = 9″H, but the width is 54″ wide and vinyl doesn’t have a specific cutting direction.
  • Beginning chains do not count as stitches
  • Instructions are written for pencil pouch with adjustments for crayon pouch in parenthesis.
  • The holes in both pieces of vinyl need to line up.
  • There is no stitch count listed because the stitch count will depend on how many holes you add to your vinyl.
  • You can easily adjust the size of the finished pouch to make it taller, shorter, wider, or thinner. Just cut the vinyl pieces to your desired measurements before adding the holes. The pattern will still work up the same way, no matter what measurements are used.

Instructions

Cut 2 – 8″ x 3″ pieces of clear vinyl (for crayons cut 2 – 4″ x 3″pieces) — punch holes all the way around the edge, leaving approximately 1/4″ between them. Make sure there is a hole in every corner. TIP: Punch holes in one piece, then use it as a template for cutting holes in the 2nd piece. This will ensure you’ve cut the holes the same in both pieces.

Place the two pieces together, matching up the holes.

Insert hook through both pieces of vinyl, in the first hole down from the left corner (leave the top row of holes unworked at this time).

Step 4: Working in the round with no joins, sc around the entire opening as follows: Ch 1, turn project, sc in the middle sc of the corner hole, sc in the next sc and across the top, sc in middle sc of next corner, turn project over, sc in the middle sc and in the next sc and across the top, sc in middle sc of the corner (I had 28 sts, but this will depend on how many holes you have across the top of your vinyl.)

Steps 5-7: sc in each st arnd, turn at the end of round 7

Steps 8-10: Ch 1, sc across the top and turn (leave other side unworked); (My stitch count was 14.) <Closure Flap Created>

Step 11: sl st around the entire opening, placing sl sts in the ends of rows 8-10 also, sl st to join in 1st sl st; Fasten.
