This pattern was designed to fit a standard-size bowl, but it’s incredibly versatile and works beautifully for soups, stews, chili, cereal, oatmeal, ice cream, and so much more. It’s one of those projects that you’ll reach for again and again — and once you make one, you’ll definitely want to make more!
Let’s dive in and talk all about what makes this Chicken Soup Bowl Cozy so special.
What is a Soup Bowl Cozy?
If you’ve never used a soup bowl cozy before, you’re in for a treat.
A soup bowl cozy is a crocheted bowl holder designed to sit around your bowl, allowing you to safely hold hot or cold foods without burning your hands or freezing your fingers. Instead of fumbling with napkins or potholders, the cozy stays securely around the bowl and moves with it.
It creates a protective layer between your hands and the bowl, making it easier and more comfortable to carry your food from the microwave to the table or curl up on the couch with your favorite comfort meal.
One of the best features of this Chicken Soup Bowl Cozy is that it’s designed to be microwave-friendly when made with 100% cotton yarn. Cotton can safely handle microwave heat, making it perfect for reheating soups and leftovers.
It’s important to note, though, that if you use any yarn other than 100% cotton, the cozy should not be placed in the microwave. Cotton is the safest and most reliable choice for heat-safe kitchen crochet.
Beyond practicality, bowl cozies also add a decorative element to your kitchen. And this chicken design? It adds a whole lot of personality.
The Inspiration Behind the Chicken Soup Bowl Cozy
The original inspiration for this bowl cozy series actually goes back to my kids — and a mission to make eating more fun.
When my boys were little, they absolutely loved those classic Zoo Pals plates and utensils. You know the ones: “Zoo Pals make eating FUN!” Suddenly dinner wasn’t just dinner… it was an experience. They were excited to eat, and honestly, it made mealtime so much more enjoyable for everyone.
Fast forward a several years, and my daughter turned out to be a bit of a picky eater. I remembered how much those fun animal dishes helped my boys, and it got me thinking… what if I could recreate that same playful feeling with crochet?
That’s when I started sketching.
Originally, I designed a whole collection of animal bowl cozies with the goal of turning everyday meals into something fun, cozy, and inviting. Actually, you can find the original sketches are still on my Instagram, and it’s been so much fun slowly bringing each of those designs to life over the years.
The Chicken Soup Bowl Cozy is part of that original vision.
There’s something so comforting and familiar about chicken soup, and pairing it with a cheerful chicken design just felt right. It turns an ordinary bowl into something playful and warm — and brings a little bit of that childhood magic back to the table.
Because sometimes, making food more fun really does make all the difference.
