Crochet Alongs, also knows as CALs, are a fun way for the community to crochet together. Everyone works on the same project and then we post pictures and share our finished pieces.

Has anything changed from last year?

I have hosted a few CALs over the years, but I had never done a year long event until 2024, when I thought “let’s learn new stitches together!” and I’m so glad we did. There were many crochet stitches I’ve seen, but never took the time to learn. With the 2024 New Year New Stitch Crochet Along, I got my chance, and I got to share the fun with you!

This crochet along also taught me a lot about myself.

I had big plans and great intentions, but there were a few months I fell short on delivering each stitch by the first of the month and some months were particularly tough in delivering the additional pattern to practice the stitch.

Some of it was just plain “life gets in the way” and some of it was other crochet events I had planned, like Shark Week or 12 Days of Christmas. So, I’ve decided to make a few changes to the expectations I have for myself and the promises I make to the community.

One thing that will be different for 2025 is that there will not be planned additional projects for each stitch. Instead I have written the 22 Projects You Can Make with a Flat Strip of Crochet Fabric blog post. This will give you ideas on what you can make with practice swatches!

This doesn’t mean that there won’t be any projects, but I won’t have scheduled monthly projects! There will be bonus projects along the way! Maybe one month I won’t have a project, but another month I might have two, ya never know.

Another thing that will change with the Tunisian Crochet Along is the size of the squares. Instead of 15″ squares, I will be making 6″ squares, but will also give gauge and suggested stitch count for 12″ and 15″ squares, so there are more finishing possibilities if you choose to put together an afghan at the end of the year! This also allows for more stitch practice if you choose to make smaller squares!

And the last big change is the due date. Although my goal will be the 1st of the month, let’s just say the 1st week of the month. Like I mentioned before, sometime there are other crochet events that get in the way and sometimes things in life crop up.

My family will be going through some big changes next year as well and things are a little more up in the air in 2025. I don’t want to under deliver again, so I’m trying to give myself a little more time to get things published. Making 6″ squares instead of larger squares will definitely be a big help too.

So, what are the 2025 Tunisian Crochet Along details?

The 2025 crochet along is a free event that runs from January – December, 2025! Each month will feature a new Tunisian crochet stitch for us to learn together!

I polled the audience asking what type of stitches you all would like to learn next year and the answer by a landslide was Tunisian crochet stitches! I am so thrilled with this, because even though I’ve played with Tunisian a bit, I’ve always wanted to do more with it, but have never seen the interest (supply & demand if you will). Now that I know so much of the community is interest in learning, I am over the moon!

What materials will we need?

I will be using worsted weight yarn, and am debating between Lion Brand Pound of Love and Knit Picks Brava for the yarn. Of course you can choose something else if you have a preferred yarn, but I love the color selections of Brava and the yarn amount from Pound of Love!

With Tunisian crochet, you need a hook two sizes larger than what is listed on the label, because Tunisian crochet tends to curl up, so I will likely be using a J/6.00mm or K/6.50mm crochet hook.

I won’t be making my first square until after Christmas, but as soon as I have the definite info, I will update this post.

For now I suggest buying an entire Tunisian crochet hook set! It’s best to have a few different sizes you can try out to meet gauge and also to keep the fabric a bit looser.

I have the KnitPro Ginger set, but the We Crochet Radiant Tunisian Crochet Hook Set is another great option!

There are also multiple sets on Amazon, such as the Clover Interchangeable Tunisian Hooks and this beautiful interchangeable aluminum set. You can also find sets that include circular and straight hooks!

I also suggest buying a fabric steamer and blocking boards if you don’t already have them. Unfortunately, the best way to combat the Tunisian curl is by steam blocking your squares after you’re done. While using a larger hook does help, it’s going to be less helpful with some stitches than it is others.

Is there anything else we need to know?

The Tunisian crochet along will take place in the Blackstone Designs Crochet Community group on Facebook.

By hosting it in the Blackstone Designs Crochet Community for this event, we have a place to share our squares with each other and work through any issues we’re facing with each stitch pattern.

But no worries if you’re not on Facebook or it’s not your thing, because each crochet stitch pattern will be listed on this website for free! Come back to this post each month for the directory of patterns!

Plus, I will share my makes on Instagram! Tag me ( @blackstone_designs) or use #NYResCAL to share your finished squares!

I don’t think it is your blonde streak (mine happens to be grey!) since I am not seeing the March link activated yet either. I figured I would continue to check back each day in hopes things would be ready then.

No, you haven’t missed it, it’s coming soon (but very late). I’ve been dealing with some health issues that’s kept me from recording, unfortunately.
