After deciding on the herringbone stitch for the January 2024 New Stitch Crochet Along, I knew I was going to be in love with the stitch and want to use it for everything.
Of course my first instinct was the Herringbone Hat (and the Herringbone Earwarmer which is coming soon), but I found this stitch to be so gorgeous, I knew I was going to want it in my home decor as well!
Since I knew I would be using worsted weight yarns for a lot of the herringbone stitch projects, I decided to switch it up a bit and use bulky weight yarn for the pillows! I’m so glad I made that choice, because I love the soft and squishy finished look the yarn gave them! And the time reduction in finishing the project didn’t hurt either!
How Can I Customize the Crochet Herringbone Stitch Pillows?
While I made my pillows in two tone, you could make them solid, have one side in one color and the other side in another color, or make them striped! You could also opt for a variegated or self striping yarn!
Another customization option is making the pillows in another yarn weight! This stitch would look beautiful in a lace weight and jumbo weight all the same! The stitch multiple are listed in the notes, so you can easily make a gauge swatch and size them for the new yarn weight!
How do I style with the crochet Herringbone Stitch Pillows?
The fun thing about these pillows is that no matter what colors, yarn fibers, and yarn weights you choose, you will end up with stunning crochet pillows, because the herringbone stitch has such an elevated look.
So much so that you could use the Herringbone stitch no matter what your home decor theme is! Farmhouse interior design? Check! Country Chic? Check! Mid Modern? Check! Just choose your yarns and colors to fit the theme and the stitch goes with everything!
Are you ready to make your own crochet herringbone stitch pillows and really bring your living space together? Let’s get started!

About the Materials
These crochet Herringbone Stitch Pillows were crocheted with 100% Acrylic Worsted Weight Yarn, specifically Loops & Threads Charisma. Good substitutes for this yarn are Premier Serenity Chunky (exact match), Lion Brand Feels Like Cuddles, or Lion Brand Scarfie!
In addition you will need an 10.00mm crochet hook (I highly recommend Clover hooks!), a 16-20″ pillow form, yarn needles for hiding strings, and lastly a pair of scissors!

Notes
- Beginning chains do not count as stitches.
- Where asterisks appear, repeat the instructions between them.
- To work a gauge swatch, chain 14 then work the pattern below for 9 total rows.
- Important: When working slip stitches in ch-1 spaces, make sure to work over the front of the fabric and not around the whole piece (which would cinch the fabric).
- “2 rows below” will always be an even number row during repeat rows. For example, from R5 you will work into R2, from R7 you will work into R4…etc.
- Tutorial photos are at the end of the pattern.
- Stitch chart is on the last page.
