In this blog post, we’ll dive into what makes the Acorn Granny Square so special, how to use it in different projects, tips for customizing your motif, and why it’s such a great pattern for autumn crochet. Whether you’re making blankets, bags, pillows, or fall-themed home décor, this square will bring a little extra charm to your work.

Let’s Talk Granny Squares

While the “Granny Square” refers to the classic and recognizable crochet motifs made with clusters of double crochet stitches, the term is now used interchangeably with afghan squares that work in a similar fashion (worked in the round from the center-out).

Here’s what makes a granny square special:

  • Worked in the round: Instead of crocheting back and forth in rows, you start in the center (usually with a ring of chains or a magic circle) and build outward in rounds.
  • Versatile design: Beyond the “classic granny,” you can make granny squares in countless styles—solid squares, floral centers, themed motifs (like pumpkins, hearts, or acorns), textured stitches, or even lacy designs.
  • Project potential: Granny squares can be used as standalone motifs (like coasters or appliqués) or joined together to create larger projects like blankets, garments, and bags.

Granny squares are popular because they’re:

  • Portable (you can make one at a time and connect them later).
  • Scrap-friendly (great for using leftover yarn).

In short: a granny square is a small, crocheted square motif that can be simple or complex, and it’s one of the most timeless building blocks in crochet.

Why You’ll Love the Acorn Granny Square Pattern

There are so many reasons crocheters fall in love with this motif:

  • Seasonal vibes: The little acorn detail makes this a perfect autumn crochet square. Pair it with the pumpkin granny square, leaf appliqués, or earthy color palettes for a cohesive fall project.
  • 2-in-1 versatility: Work it up as a square for traditional granny square blankets, or turn it into a diamond shape for more modern, geometric designs (great for bags!).
  • Scrap-friendly: The acorn can be made with tiny bits of yarn, making this a stash-busting favorite.
  • Easy with a twist: While the stitches themselves are easy, the shaping and finishing techniques give you a fun little challenge without being overwhelming.

The end result is a motif that looks polished and detailed but still works up quickly enough to be enjoyable.

Square or Diamond – Which Version Should You Make?

The best part about this pattern is that you get two options in one.

Square Acorn Granny Square

  • Classic look: Perfect for joining into blankets, sweaters, and pillows.
  • Easy to pair: Works seamlessly with other granny square motifs.
  • Stable edges: Great for projects where you need clean corners and edges.

Diamond Acorn Granny Square

  • Dynamic shapes: Great for bags, scarves, and table runners.
  • Modern twist: The diamond layout gives your project a fresh and unique look.
  • Endless creativity: Alternate diamond and square motifs together for a bold and playful pattern mix.

No matter which you choose, the acorn motif remains the centerpiece, and you’ll end up with a finished square that feels both timeless and whimsical.

Project Ideas Using the Acorn Granny Square

So what can you make with this pattern? Pretty much anything you’d normally use granny squares for—but with a seasonal twist. Let’s expand:

  • Blankets & Afghans: Create a full fall blanket with rows of acorn motifs mixed with plain squares or other fall themed squares.
  • Throw Pillows: A set of acorn square pillows instantly adds autumn charm to your living room.
  • Tote Bags: Combine acorn squares with solid granny motifs to make a cute fall-themed market bag.
  • Table Runners & Placemats: The diamond shape works beautifully for elongated home décor pieces.
  • Wall Hangings: Join four or five squares together, add tassels, and you have a handmade seasonal wall accent.
  • Wearables: Use it as a pocket or panel on a fall cardigan, poncho, or scarf.

This motif shines best when it’s part of a bigger project, but it’s also adorable on its own.

Adjusting the Size

Want to change things up a bit? Adjusting the size of your Acorn Granny Square is easy:

  • Smaller motif: Use a thinner yarn and smaller hook.
  • Larger motif: Add extra rounds of granny stitch or use a bulky yarn for oversized projects like floor cushions or statement blankets.

This flexibility makes the acorn square perfect for crochet-alongs, stash-busting projects, or personalized gifts.

Yarn & Color Inspiration

When it comes to crocheting the Acorn Granny Square, your color choices can make all the difference.

  • Traditional fall tones: Think rich browns, golden yellows, burnt oranges, and deep greens.
  • Neutral farmhouse: Use cream or taupe backgrounds with natural acorn shades for rustic home décor.
  • Bright and playful: Swap out browns for pinks, purples, or blues to create fun and unexpected motifs.
  • Holiday ready: Work the acorn in metallic yarns or deep reds and greens for a Christmas-ready design.

Because the acorn detail only takes a small amount of yarn, you can mix and match colors without committing to large skeins.

Skill Level & Techniques

The Acorn Granny Square crochet pattern is listed as an intermediate skill level. Here’s what you should know before starting:

  • Basic stitches: Magic ring, chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet.
  • Advanced stitches: Front post double crochet and surface slip stitch (used for creating the acorn cap).
  • Shaping: You’ll use a few slightly more advanced techniques to form the acorn neatly.
